Off to Cairns we go, armed with a carefully prepared list. After discovering we couldn’t find the items, we needed in either Cairns or Townsville, we spent the weekend shopping online. It’s definitely a downside of not living near a big city.
Thanks to our children, who helped by picking up items and express-posting them, packages are on their way from Adelaide, Brisbane, Ipswich, and Melbourne—most arriving just days before we leave. Talk about cutting it close!
Once in Cairns, we headed to the money exchange. We knew we needed to order Chilean pesos, but we didn’t realise we wouldn’t be able to get Argentine pesos. With the Chilean pesos secured and a lingering fear of ordering US dollars—given the unfavourable exchange rate—we left wondering how far our 100,000 pesos would actually stretch.
With the list now complete and our bank account a lot lighter, we’re ready to start packing and double-checking our gear against the mandatory kit list from Rat Race.
