Day 7 January 7, 2025

What did I just read

With all this talk about South America and the Andes Mountain range, it came as no surprise when Facebook’s algorithm started bombarding me with South America-related posts. One particular post caught my eye—it featured an image showing the entire length of the Andes, stretching down the west coast of the continent. As I marvelled at the scale, I couldn’t help but wonder: could the Drake Passage have pushed Antarctica away from South America, cutting off the rest of the mountain range?

The post had hundreds of comments, so I decided to dive in and see what others had to say—perhaps someone had some interesting insight into the Andes, especially the part that looks to be in Antarctica. Among the first few comments, one stood out. It read: “The Andes Mountain range is there to stop the Pacific Ocean from flooding South America, as the Pacific Ocean is higher than the Atlantic Ocean.”

I’ll leave that one for you to ponder.
