Day 8 January 8, 2024

It’s alright for you; I’ve got to cycle that

Since the decision was made not to postpone the trip again, as I would be able to travel in the sweeper vehicle, Marc has constantly chanted, “It’s alright for you; I’ve got to cycle that,” every time I mention the gradient, the altitude, the gravel roads, the switchbacks on the descent, and the possible sub-zero temperatures he could face. It’s been a bit of a running joke; I am sure it’s his way of managing the fear and discomfort that comes with the idea of cycling through such challenging conditions.

Despite his playful comments, I can tell that underneath, he’s mentally preparing himself for the physical demands ahead. He knows the road will be unforgiving, and each incline will test him in ways that won’t be possible to replicate in the comfort of a vehicle. The steep climbs, unpredictable weather, and dangerous descents are real concerns, especially when navigating through rugged terrains where losing focus for even a moment could mean disaster.

The only time he doesn’t show a hint of concern is when we talk about the temperatures once we are over the Andes. At that point, we’re supposed to be in a much warmer climate. We’ll be looking at temperatures in the high 20 to mid-30 Celsius with 60-70% humidity, making it feel almost like cycling in the middle of a winter afternoon here.

Even with the lack of heat and humidity Marc will be faced with a different kind of endurance. His body will have to cope with fridged temperatures whilst going over the top of the Andes, followed by long days with the relentless sun and wind on him as he battles through days of over 150km. His stamina and mental fatigue will be tested.

He’s already thinking about the ways he’ll have to hydrate and protect himself from the sun.

In all, it will be a delicate balance and a daunting journey ahead, and Marc’s readiness will be pushed to the limit in both directions.
